Last week was a fun week. We had our field trip on Wednesday, which was really fun. It was perfect because there were not too many people there and the kids were able to explore a lot. We also enjoyed the My Body lab. It was a personal class just for us where students learned about their bones, the heart, and some digestion. Tuesday was also a kind of fun day. We did some St. Patrick’s Day activities and learned about the real St. Patrick. We also wrote a story about a leprechaun together, the students are going to illustrate our story now. We ended Tuesday with our Writers celebration. There was also some learning going on this week too=)

Notes

·        Next week is our sight words test, please practice!

·        Don’t forget to send back book bags on Thursday.

·        There is no school on Friday.

·        We are holding a toy drive for children at Doernbecher’s Hospital. Thank you to everyone who has already donated!

·        We have a preview night for new students if you know anyone who is interested in attending next year.

*Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Warner will be taking 3-4 students with them to Doernbeckers hospital to drop of the toys they have raised. She will be picking students based on a story or paper they write. If your child would like to enter the contest to see if they can go, the writing should answer “If you could spend one day with a child from Doernbecher’s, what would you like to do with them?”

Reading-

Next week we will be doing a lot of review for our sight words and unit test, all on Thursday!

Math-

Last week we began our Measuring unit. The students are really enjoying it, and catching on pretty quickly. One hard concept for them to understand is taller and longer. They sometimes switch the meanings. K.MD.A

Writing-

This week we began our unit on persuasive writing. On Friday I taught the kids how to write poster about something they feel strongly about. They had fun with this! So if your child comes home wanting to make posters to hang around the house you will know why=)

Bible-

We have had so much fun this week in Bible. Every day until Easter we open one Easter egg to help us learn about the Easter story. Here is what we have done so far.

Day 1- There was a leaf in the egg to show how people laid down palm leafs for Jesus as he walked into the city.

Day 2- Our egg had bread in it to represent the last supper.

Day 3- We opened an egg with money in it, and talked about how Judas, his disciple, had betrayed Jesus for money. But then afterwards how bad Judas felt.

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend! I can’t believe that September is almost over, and October is here. Some things coming up in October are the fire station and pumpkin patch field trips, Grandparents Day, Fun Fest, and Fall conferences (No school 23rd &24^th)! Wow there is a lot=) I will post these on our calendar in your child’s OWL folder. Continue to check your child’s folder every day. We will be sending more information out about each of these events.

**Thursday Pastor Carey will be making lunch for the students so they will not need to bring lunch.

Literacy:

Next week we will be starting our first unit. We have our routines down, which means I can have the chance to work more one on one with the children. We will be practicing our sight words, and reading short stories everyday together. On Monday I will be sending home your child’s first sight word list. We have already begun to work on some of these words, so I hope they can tell you some already. Please practice every night. This list will be tested on October 30^th.

Math:

We have begun our first chapter in Math. You probably have seen the ripped up math pages coming home=) I am hoping they will get better with more practice! So be patient with the crazy looking math pages while we get a hang of it. Also you may notice some of their numbers are backwards. To ease anyone’s mind, it is normal and we will work on it all year and into next year to write them the right way. For math homework, I will begin sending this home on our next chapter which will begin in a week or two. The math homework is optional, but if they do finish it they get a prize.

Bible:

Next week we will be talking about Noah and the ark. Our focus is on obeying what God tells us to do.

Social Studies:

Next week we are kicking off our Pumpkin unit! We will be observing pumpkins, cutting them open, watching them mold and grow, learning about the life cycle, making pumpkin milkshakes, and ending our unit with our pumpkin patch field trip on the 31^st! I would love to do a melted crayon pumpkin craft. If parents can donate small pumpkins, we have a ton of broken crayons=)

Here are our finished people for our community helpers unit.  Each student picked a community helper they would like to be. 

These are our finger paint flowers.  These will be going in students portfolios so you will get to see these during conferences. 

Students made a picture of their favorite place to go with their family, along with their family on clothes pins. In Bible we talked about Cain and Abel, and how important it is to love our family's:)

Well I cannot believe we have less than 3 months left of school! Time is going quick, and I think the next couple months will keep going that way, especially with Spring break coming up!

I wanted to say sorry for not sending home bible verse test sheets the last couple weeks! We are practicing them at school, and actually the last couple weeks we have been building on top of the prior verse. So this week they will know 3 consecutive verses.

I did remember to take pictures this week, so here are some of them=)
