Please forgive me for sending out my blog late this week! I do have some cute pictures below of our field trip though=)

Literacy

This week we have moved on to unit 2 in our literacy curriculum. Last week we took our test which was sent home on Thursday. I also sent home how the students did on their sight word lists. I was very happy with their scores. If you haven’t seen in their folders, there are new sight words in there.

Math

In math we are continuing to work on numbers from 0-10. The biggest thing right now for them is number recognition. Most can count to 10, but some are having trouble remembering what it looks like. Whenever you get a chance, take time to point different numbers out and practice writing them.

On Friday I sent home a lot of papers in student folders if you have not had a chance to look. Two important papers are the field trip slips for the fire station and the pumpkin patch. You can turn these in as soon as possible.   

Here are some things we have been working on.

Literacy-

In literacy we are continuing to practice our rhyming words. Most students have this down. We are also practicing hearing sounds and repeating them. Both of these skills help students as they begin to learn how to read. Last week was our first week of reading. It was really fun to see students so excited to be reading. Again, learning those sight words will help tremendously in learning to read. The first 100 sight words student learn make up about 50% of books! In writing we learning to label our work and sound out our words.

Math-

 In math we have been working on numbers 1-5, greater than, less than, and equal too. If you find opportunity use this with your children at home. The more they hear it, the better they will remember it!

Science-

Last week was our first week of our pumpkin unit. We explored the inside and outside, counted the seeds, and started our classroom pumpkin patch. Here are some pictures=)

Notes:

I know students bring their own snacks, but sometimes parents and students forget, which is totally okay. But we are running out of extra snacks if any parent would like to donate some. Thank you!

Even with our short week we had a lot of fun! Here are some things that we did.

This week we finished our unit on pumpkins by planting our own pumpkins! The students did an amazing job. I opened the top but they are the ones that took all of the pulp and seeds out. It was fun getting dirty and being real scientists! Each student helped put one spoon full of soil into the pumpkins and then I showed them how to plant the seeds inside. I am hoping next week we can see the sprouts start to grow!

We finished our pumpkin unit by going to the Pumpkin Patch! Here are some of the pictures.

We have been practicing our writing skills a lot lately. Right now we are focusing on sentences, and sounding out words. Here is a shared writing we did as a class together.The students took turns writing a word and they helped each other spell the words out.They were very proud of this and so was I!=)

Literacy:

·         I can identify beginning sounds.

·         I know what a verb is.

·         I can write a sentence.

Math:

·         I can count to 40

·         I can read and write my numbers 1-10

·         I know my ordinal numbers (1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd, 4^th, ect…)

Bible Verse:

·         1 Samuel 12: 24a – But be sure to fear the Lord and serve Him faithfully

Social studies:

·         I know who pilgrims are and how they came to America.

Next week we will start our unit on pilgrims, Indians, and the first Thanksgiving. I will be sending home a little note about the different things we will be doing and some ways that parents can help next week sometime.

This just made my heart smile. It says Jesus loves you and God loves you too. I didn't even help them spell any words!They wrote this by themselves then showed me and I had to take a picture=)

I hope everyone is enjoying their three day weekend! I am happy to say I have all of the report cards done, and am looking forward to seeing everyone next week. I will be sending a reminder home on Monday for the dates and times for conferences.

Focus Wall:

Literacy:     Beginning Sounds

Social Studies: Pumpkins

This last week I tested all of the students on their reading levels so I can begin sending home books with students that is at their right level. Most students are starting at a level A. By the end of the year our goal is to be at a level D.

As well, as most of you seen I have begun to send home decodable readers that we practice at school. These are great to practice sight words and to build fluency. We practice about 2-3 a week and I will continue to send these home. If students read it 5 times to someone they can earn a pint for our class. Last week we earned 7 points towards our party! We need 50 more to earn the party.

In math we will start working with teen numbers and beginning concepts of addition.

In social studies we are learning about pumpkins, which will go great with our field trip next week! We started using our science journals this week. We measured how big around our pumpkins were, weighed them, predicted if they float or sink, and labeled the parts of a pumpkin. I wish I would have taken pictures of this! Science is one of my favorite subjects to teach, the children get so excited over it.

Important notes for next week:

Field trip: we will be leaving at 8:30ish and return around 11:00ish. Please dress students based on the weather. You can bring an extra change of clothes if they are staying for after care as well. Please send students with at least $5.00 to get in and get a pumpkin.

Parent Conferences: Thursday and Friday are conferences. I look forward to seeing everyone!

Tuesday volunteer: If anyone would like to help in the classroom on Tuesday afternoon we will be cutting open our pumpkins and taking the seeds out. We will be attempting to grow our own pumpkins inside of the old ones. I have not done this before but have heard it works well.  It should be a fun experience.
