Dear Parents,

We have had a busy, yet educational week in Kindergarten. With the sounds and scents of Christmas in the air, we are studying about Christmas traditions around the world.  We have "traveled" to Mexico and the Netherlands.  We are learning a new Bible story each day using our Advent calendar.  We are counting down to Christmas and Jesus' birth.  In addition we are learning our songs and sign language for our Christmas play on Friday, December 18th at 9:30am.

There are many reminders this week. I have listed them below:

Next Wednesday, December 9th at 8:45am we will be going on a short field trip to the Hampton Senior Center in Vancouver.  I have enclosed a permission slip in everyone's OWL folder, but please see Mrs. Lee or Mrs. Palmer if you still need one.  We will be singing songs and reading some Christmas books together. This is a wonderful experience for both the kids and the seniors who live there!

Thursday, December 18 is our class Christmas Party.  More details will be coming soon! :)

Friday, December 19th is our Christmas Play at 9:30am and then dismissal at noon.  You are welcome to take your child home after the program in the morning or they may stay until noon.

Please read through the following verses with your child.  The school will be reading it for our Christmas program together.

Luke 2:8-14:

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

Bible verse

Dear parents,

A few notes:

- Our Bible verse is extra long because this is a verse the whole school is learning to go along with our Christmas program. We will practice every day at school with our sign language, and it would help if you as well practiced with your child every night.

-We are entering the Advent season, and our count down to Christmas! To prepare kids heart for the birth of Christ we will be learning about the stories leading up to his birth. Each day we will learn 1 or 2 new stories. We have a string in our class that we are hanging our pictures on, and I will be sending home copies each day with your child as well. I highly encourage you to also hang these up in your house and talk with your child each night about what the story was about. Here is a picture of what ours looks like.

Thankful post

We had a really fun 2 days this week! We talked a lot about what we are thankful for, and the first Thanksgiving. I think pictures can summarize our week=)

Thanksgiving Feast 11/22

Happy Sunday!
This past week has been filled with fun, friendship and lots to be thankful for in our classroom.

Social Studies
We are finishing up our "First Thanksgiving" books and will be sending them home this Tuesday.  The students worked hard putting the sentence strips in order and drawing pictures for each scene throughout the story of The First Thanksgiving.

Math
We are counting up to one hundred and also counting by 10's to 100.  Please practice this with your child at home too.  It can be a fun "I Spy" game at home.  I have been calling out numbers at school and having students find them on our counting chart.  We are also learning to count on....For example what numbers come after 21....

Reading
Our letter last week was Cc.  We have been watching interactive videos where the students can move to the C sound.  Learn songs about the letter C.  They also have been practicing the letter in the air to music.  In addition, we practiced our sight words and read books in small groups together.

Bible
David and Goliath:
This is a favorite story for the boys in our classroom.  They loved hearing the story about the battle scene between David and Goliath.  We watched and moved to the song "Only a boy named David."  Lastly, we watched the video from the Beginner's Bible Collection (made for young children) about the story.

Reminders
Sonshine Elementary's Thanksgiving Feast is this Tuesday.  Notes for parents who were able to provide ingredients for Stone Soup were sent home on Friday.  I clipped the note to the front of your child's OWL Folder.  I have also added the list below.
Carter- 2 cans chicken broth (8 oz. can)
Matthew- Bowls
Sierra-Sweet potatoes (1 cup peeled and sliced)
Zealand- Regular potatoes (1 cup peeled and sliced)
Archer- 1 cups leeks
Raneem- garlic/ diced tomatoes
Lara- 1 cup leeks
Addison- 2 cans Chicken Broth (8 oz. can)

Christmas Program- Friday, December 18th at 9:30 am is the Christmas Program for our school.  Each child will be given a role in the Story of Jesus' birth.  Of course, parents and grandparents are welcome!!

Parents, I am thankful for you!!  Mrs. Lee and I have the privilege of spending the day with your precious child.  They are a gift from God and it's an honor to have the opportunity to educate and have them know more about the love of Jesus through us.  Have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving wherever you may be.

Two months has flown by, and we have done so much learning! It is really fun to see the students growing intellectually, spiritually, socially, and physically. The next couple months are going to fly by, we have a lot of things planned including our harvest dinner (at church on Sunday the 22nd), our Sonshine’s thanksgiving feast for the students on Tuesday the 22^nd, and our school Christmas program December 18^th! Here is a little more information about each event.

·         Harvest Dinner is for all of our daycare, school, and church families. The students who come will sing songs, and then we will have a small service. Afterwards we have a full Thanksgiving Dinner together. It is a nice time for everyone to get together and enjoy company.

·         Sonshine’s Thanksgiving Feast is on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving during school hours. The students dress up as Pilgrims and Indians and have a feast together. We will be sending out a note for foods that students can bring to contribute to our “stone Soup”. We will also be needing a few volunteers this day, a few people to help with cooking, and a few to help in the classrooms. We will be doing crafts in each classroom to help us learn about the first thanksgiving.

           Our Christmas Program is the Friday, half-day, before winter break. This is a whole school program. Each student will be given a role to play in the story of Jesus’ birth. And of course parents and grandparents are welcome.  

Thanks to everyone who donated to Good Samaritans Operation Shoe box! We were able to fill 46 show boxes, and show 46 little kids that people are thinking about them and praying for them. The students had a great time filling the boxes and praying over them. 

New Homework- We started sending out new homework that has some more specific things that you can work on with your child. We are still doing our sight word and Bible verse tests each Friday, and I still ask that you send back the homework paper showing that your child has worked on it. Thank you!

Reading

In reading we are continuing to work on our sight words, letter of the week, and breaking words up into 2 parts. In our small groups we have been reading a book each day. I am impressed how fluently the students are reading our small readers.

Writing

We just finished up our unit on writing books to tell a story. On Friday we had our Writers Celebration to celebrate all of the hard work our students have been doing! Our next writing unit is about writing how-to books. This unit involves a lot more word writing, but I think the kiddos are up for a challenge!

Math

In math we have been working really hard on our teen numbers, especially the tricky ones like 11, 12, 13, and 15. They are catching on to the fact that every number start with a one (We sing a song to go with this=)).

Bible

Our Bible verse will be the same next week because this is the verse we will be using for Harvest dinner. The next 2 weeks we will be looking a little more at Thanksgiving and the things we are thankful for.

Social Studies

We have been working on our First Thanksgiving books. The students have been putting a lot of effort into them. Here are some of their pictures.
