Wow, our break is coming to an end! It has been quite long with the extra 3 days! I am excited to get back in the swing of things, as I am sure many of you are! Next week we will be practicing all of our routines again and slowly get back into the routine of things.

We are planning to hold our belated Christmas Party on Friday afternoon. Parents are still welcome to come, the performance will begin at 11:30, then lunch in the classroom and party will follow! I know many parents volunteered to cook food from around the world for us. If you would still like to that would be great, if you are unable to I completely understand! I would still like to have a little party after our singing if anyone would like to come and help=) I’m hoping for 2 volunteers.

There will be a few adjustments to our new year at school too. One, is that after our winter break, we drop our rest time. I have found mid-year most kids do not need it any more. We will replace rest with more social studies and science=) I will send how towels and blankets Tuesday.

Another fun addition is we are adding "read to someone" during our daily 5. This class is just amazing and I am excited how well they are reading. I think they will really enjoy this!

Here are a few articles I found that parents may be interested about handwriting, and the Common Core and why we use it.

December th, 6:30: Christmas Eve Candlelight Service

Tuesday, January 24th: OMSI field trip is planned from 9:30-2:30. I wanted to give a heads up in case you would like to chaperone.

Christmas break will be from Monday, Dec. 19th- Monday, Jan. 2nd. School starts back Tuesday the 3rd.

Reading-

In reading we are continuing to work on blending sounds, and we will work on ending sounds. For our comprehension, we are focusing on making connections between texts, and learning more about characters. In grammar we are talking about adjectives. The word adjectives are just beginning to be introduced, we mainly talk about describing words.

Next Friday we will be taking our unit tests.

Writing-

Last week we finished up our All About Me Unit, and on Friday we had a celebration for all of our hard work!

Next week we will begin our How-to writing. Students will be writing about things they know how to do.

Social Studies

Each year, our Kindergarten class learns about Christmas around the World. It's a fun time to explore different countries and talk about our own traditions.

Bible-

In Bible of course we will be talking about the birth of Jesus. A fun way we do that is each day the kids get to see a new picture. Each picture represents a story leading up to Jesus's birth. I love being in a christian school were we get to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

Have a great weekend!

11/17/2016

Today we counted our 50th day in school! We are about a third of the way done, I can not believe it. And then on the other hand I can! The kids have grown so much in 50 days, they are reading, writing, and starting to add numbers! It is so fun to watch them grow.

Coming Up:
Sunday, November 20th, 11 am: Harvest Dinner at Faith Baptist Church

Thank you!

I appreciate everyone who was able to donate to such a wonderful cause, Operation Christmas Child. My heart was warmed as students happily filled the boxes and prayed over them.

This week will be a light week, we will have fun making graphs, completing out Thanksgiving day book, making crafts, and writing about turkey's. Tuesday afternoon we are going to do a craft and have some treats. If you would like to donate any treats let me know! I'm thinking of having pie and whip cream in the spirit of Thanksgiving!

This week we got a lot accomplished!

Literacy-

We continued to work on breaking sounds up and putting sounds together. We will continue to work on this all year. We also had our first spelling test! They did great, thank you for all the hard work you do at home with them. In writing and reading we have been focusing on how sentences begin with a capital and end with a period and how periods tell us to stop!

Math

In math, we have been talking a lot about how numbers beyond 10 are made up of 10 and some more. For example, 11 is 10 and 1 more. This is a foundational step later on as they begin to add and subtract.

Writing

Kids will begin to finish up their all about me books after Thanksgiving and we will have our Writers Celebration! During our handwriting without tears we finished our capital letters! Now on to lowercase.

Bible

Next week in Bible we will continue to talk about Thanksgiving. This is the first time many of the students are hearing about the first Thanksgiving, so it is fun to talk to them about it. I love that we get to talk about how the pilgrims left England because they couldn't worship God as they wanted, and how they brought their Bibles and prayed on the Mayflower.

Extra Notes:

I know Thanksgiving isn't even done yet, but I thought I should get a head start on Christmas. For our half day Dec. 16th before break, we will be having a party. If you would like to come help please let me know! Thank you!

Our OMSI field trip is scheduled for Tuesday, January 24th. If you would like to volunteer I wanted to get out information early.

Have a great weekend!

11/10/16

Happy Thursday Parents!

Today we had a wonderful Veteran's Day Assembly to celebrate our Veteran's and to remember why we are taking a day off tomorrow.

I am so sorry for the lack of pictures this week! Time must have gotten away from me!
Notes

Next Monday is the last day to donate hygiene items for Operation Christmas child. The items should be small enough to fit in a shoe box. They do not need to be expensive. We will be putting many gifts together.

Literacy

In literacy, we are working on breaking up words into sounds and then putting them back together. This is an easy thing to practice in the car to help your child. You can ask "what word is /c/ /at/?" OR "can you break up the word cat into sounds?" So far they are catching on quickly but the more practice the better! This will really help with their writing!

We have also started our spelling words! We are doing them for 2 weeks at first so it is not too stressful. I don't want this to be too time consuming, once they can spell the word, no need to keep practicing. We will also practice in class and during daily 5.

Bible

This week we learned about Samuel. Samuel prayed to God for a child, and promised if she had a son she would give him to the Lord so he could serve.  We talked about how we can serve others, and how we should do so with a good attitude. Another thing we talked about was how slow obedience is just like disobedience. This is a great lesson to extend at home.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Our first spelling list came out today! I am easing students into spelling by practicing a set of words for 2 weeks. After we get a hang of it, we will have one list a week.

Here are some pictures of our week!
