1-13-14

I hope everyone has had a great start to their New Years. Our class had a great first week, and it flew by! This week we did a lot of assessments, and they will continue into next week with our Dibel and CBM Tests. The students are doing great though; it is really fun to see how far they have progressed in 4 short months! As the year progresses we will start focusing on reading leveled books, writing letters and stories, and doing  addition and subtraction problems.

Focus:

Our focuses for this week will stay the same.

Notes:

-As everyone probably knows the flu has been going around, so I just wanted to remind parents to wash student’s hands often, make sure they are wearing appropriate attire for outside play, and get lots of rest!

-The 29^th is a teacher work day to complete report cards. If you would like to meet for a parent conference please let me know, otherwise the report cards will be sent home and asked to return. I personally like parent conferences because it gives us time to discuss in person how things are going and answer questions without interruptions, even if it is for a short 20 minute conference.

-The 28^th is our school open house! Our class will be sending home invitations, but please put it on your calendars now! It is a fun time for the kids to show you around the room and show off all their hard work.

I hope everyone has enjoyed their winter break! My family had a nice break, though my son was sick for the most of it so we stayed home a lot and relaxed. Needless to say I got a lot of work done!

I tried something new and just took a picture of our focus wall=) Seemed easier!

Happy Monday to everyone! Sorry my post is running late this week.

Focuses for this week are:

Literacy:

·       I can blend my sounds together to make a word. (The students are doing AMAZING with this! I hope you are seeing this at home as well. I am very proud of their progression in reading!)

Math:

·       I can write my numbers to 20 (For some reason this is harder=( We practice A LOT at school, but this is definitely something easy you can do at home with your children.)

·       I can count to 50!

Bible:

Isaiah 9:6

“For to us a child is born, for to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.”

Social Studies:

·       Birth of Christ

Important Info:

·       Our Program is Friday at 9:30 and we will have cookies and refreshments afterwards in the class. You may either take your child home, or if they can stay for the rest of the day and we will probably play games.

·       If you are able to bring cookies or refreshments that would be great! If not that is okay too=) Home baked goods are welcome.

·       If one or two parents would like to help the day of the program to get students dressed please let me know. Thank you!

And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace." (I know this is really long! We practiced the first half last week, so hopefully it won't be as hard. This is the verse we will be doing at our program.)

Special Notes:

*This Friday is our family field trip! Students will be going with their own family. We will meet at the church to leave at 4:00, then go to McDonalds for dinner, and then drive up to Long View for our Journey. I have heard it a wonderful sight to see. I hope everyone can make it!

*I sent home a note from Miss Jones today asking for students to send home ornaments for our ornament exchange on the last day of school before break. She asked for it to be back by the 6^th, but since you received the note this week we can turn them in next week.

I hope everyone had a great weekend. The Thanksgiving fest was so fun today, and it was so nice to see all of the families.

Next week will be REALLY easy. Monday afternoon we will be doing our thanksgiving party. We are going to do four fun crafts, Indian shirt making, cookie frosting, bead making, and sewing stockings (and I know stockings are not really Thanksgivingish! I am kind of killing two birds with one stone though by teaching them how pilgrim kids sewed and they get Christmas stockings=)). We decided not to do any food since we had such a big harvest fest today.  On Tuesday we have our field trip to the Portland Children’s Museum. The kids will have so fun here, we get to have our own clay class with an art teacher. For the field trip, students only need to a lunch and an extra snack for the morning. I recommend them not bringing any extra money.  After Tuesday we have three days off!

Parents, I am sorry I did not have a chance to post this weekend. My family and I went to Seattle this weekend for my Nieces first birthday! But I figure better late than never=)

The Week Focus Wall:

Literacy: I can blend sounds to make a word.

Math:   I can write my numbers 0-20

         I can cou:nt to 50

Bible Verse: Psalm 118:28 You are my God and I will give you thanks’ you are my God and I will exalt you.

Social Studies: Pilgrims, Indians, and the Mayflower.

We just finished our Unit 1 test in Literacy and took our big test on Friday. It took about 45 minutes! That is a long time for our little kinders, but they did great! You should have seen the test sent home in their take home folders. We are now beginning our second unit.

Ways to help at home:

1.    Help students with sounding out and blending words. For example I might ask what word is /c/ /a/ /t/? and see if they can come up with cat. Or I might do it backwards and say what are the sounds in dog? /d/ /o/ /g/.

2. Ask questions when reading with your children? For example: what was the story about? What happened first? Who was this story about?

3.  Practice counting. Our goal is to be able to count to 50. We practice every day before math but still only about ½ can do it.

Important info:

·       Please remember to bring in a white shirt for our Indian unit, I only have 2 as of now! If you do not have one and cannot get one please let me know and I can provide one.

·       Please send back field trip permissions slips by tomorrow for our Tuesday trip to the Portland Children’s Museum.

·       Harvest Dinner is Sunday. We practiced our songs today and the kids did great! I am excited to watch them.

·       Would any parents like to volunteer for our Thanksgiving party? It will be next Monday from 1:00-3:00. We will be doing craft rotations.

·       This Friday is our P-Party! Our class earned enough points to get a party. The P is for P.J.’s, popcorn, pizza, and a P movie.

·       I have math homework packets for students who would like them for extra practice. I told them if they want to, and finish it and bring it back they get to pick something from our treasure box. The homework is based on the chapter we are currently doing.

My, this time of year is sooo busy! And fun. I hope everyone enjoys their week!
