4/2/2015

Last week seemed to fly by, especially with our 100’s day party, our dentist visit and all the other fun things. Pictures from out week are below=)

Notes
·       I sent home the permission slip for our OMSI Visit (March 18th), so make sure to look in their folders.
·       Registration for next year has begun. We are also doing Kindergarten assessments for next year on March 30th and 31st if there are any families interested that you may know.
·       Next week we are having a Seusstastic week to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday! On Tuesday we are reading Fox in Socks so have your child wear the silliest socks they have!
·       Please forgive me for the large amount of paper sent home this week! We have a new mailbox system for take home papers. Also students are helping pass out papers, so if you accidently get another child’s work just send it back and I will make sure it get to the right place=)

Reading:
Last week we worked really hard on our sight words (which by the way the students did amazing on their tests!), and reading nonsense words. Nonsense words are helpful because students learn how to sound out and blend words, and they are not able to guess them, so it fine tunes the blending skills. It also helps as they begin to read longer words which need to be broken up to read.

Next week we are reading a lot of Dr. Seuss books and working on our Rhyming skills. Students are encouraged to bring in any Dr. Seuss books they have and if they would like they can read their book to the class!

Math
On Tuesday we will be taking our subtractions test, and then be moving in to breaking numbers 11-20 up into tens and ones. For example 19 has 1 ten and 9 ones. Students are also continuing to take their addition and subtraction times tests to help with fluency.

Writing
In writing we are continuing to work on our How-To books. We are really focusing on breaking things into small steps, while also practicing those basic skills like spacing, capital letters, and sounding out small and long words.

Bible
Next week is our Missions week. We will get to talk about what a missionary is, why they are important, and what they do. We are lucky to have our own missionary at school, Mrs. Strickalnd. So she will be talking to the class about her experiences.

Our hundreds day party! The student's projects turned out great!

The first and second graders even came and helped us=)

Our "Teeth Experiment" to find out what soda, coffee, and acidic food do to our teeth!

2/23/2015

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend, and hopefully any time off last week. I sadly was sick most of it, but now feeling much better. So I apologize for getting this blog out so late! Below are some important notes, pictures from last week, and what we will be doing this week.

Notes
·       100’s day projects are due on Wednesday! I sent home the note about it before we left for break. This is not meant to be stressful, please have fun with it! It can be as easy as 100 stickers on a paper or as crafty as knitting 100 loops. I am very excited to see what everyone brings.
·       Our sight word test is this Friday! If students didn’t get to practice much over break, there is still this week=) We practice in class too, so together I think they will do great.
·       Our next field trip is planned for Wednesday, March 18th to OMSI! I am excited about this because we get to join in a lab on My Body which we have been learning about. I will send home permission slips soon, but I wanted to give a heads up for any parents who like to volunteer. I will need at least 2 chaperones=) The trip will be close to the whole school day.

Reading: blending and segmenting
In reading we are practicing hearing those sounds in our CVC words (short three letter words). It may seem like an easy task, but many kindergarteners are still learning to differentiate all the sounds in a word, and it can be tricky for some.  You can help at home by asking students “what is the first/last/ middle sound you hear in man?” This helps as they begin to read and write. They are also working on breaking up words which helps in spelling.
We are also beginning to focus more on punctuation marks, what they are called and how we use them.

Writing: How-to books
In writing, we started our “How to” writing last week. In this type of writing students pick something they know how to do and write directions on how to do it. They will have a finished poster product when they are done, which we will get to celebrate again.

Math: subtraction
In math we have moved on to subtraction. Most students understand this concept but learning how to write the equation is much more difficult=/ Doing the homework at home together will definitely help them.
We are also continuing to do addition and subtraction timed tests. You say “Kindergarten! What! Crazy!” I know;) In kindergarten they are supposed to be fluent in numbers within 5, for example 5+5=10 and 10-5=5. I consider them fluent if they can do 6 in one minute. They start at +0 and when they pass they get to move up to the next level. All the kids are at different spots and that is completely okay!

Science: All About Me
Like I mentioned we are working on our All About Me Unit. So we are learning about our bodies, senses, and how to keep healthy. This week we will be learning about our teeth and have a dentist coming to see us on Thursday.

Bible: God Heals
In bible we are learning how God can help and heal us. For Bible verses this week I did not send home the verse, but we will practice in class and I will test them on Friday.

Literacy:
Next week we will be finishing up our last lesson in our unit. So students will take their test on Thursday. We will be finishing up breaking CVC words into sounds. Students should be able to recognize the first, last, and middle sound now. Students are also expected to be able to read short passages and pick the picture that matches. This is where those little paper book I send home comes in handy for practicing=)

Math
Monday we will be taking our addition test. The students have this down pretty good! Then we will begin our chapter on Subtraction.

Social Studies
Last week we made a body map and talked about blood and our bones. Next week, we are going to learn about our lungs and our heart.

I hope everyone enjoys their weekend!
