Happy Friday! Our field trip went great today. The students had a lot of fun, they were pretty exhausted by the time we got back though. We kept the rest of the afternoon pretty low key.

Here are some pictures from our last week

1/25/15

This week flew by with only 3 days! I know the next three weeks will fly by as well, and then it will be time for mid-winter break! Here are some notes about our next couple weeks.

Field Trip will be $9.00, so sorry I forgot to put it on permission slip!

Spagetti factory tomorrow! Don’t forget to bring the flyer!

Notes
1.    Next Friday is our field trip to The Children’s Portland Museum. Please bring slips in by Tuesday.
2.   Next week we will be practicing our class chapel that will be held on February 2nd. PLEASE help them practice their lines, and we will be practicing everyday at school. Parents are also more than welcome to join us for this class chapel to watch the students=)
3.   On Friday, February 13th we will be having our Valentine’s Day party. I am asking if 1-2 parents would be willing to help put the party together. They would help collect food or treats for the party, plan some fun games for the students and help facilitate it.
4.   Next week I will be sending home report cards and comments.

Literacy
In reading we are continuing to work on sounding out words in reading, and learning to blend and segment words out loud. I feel like I have been saying this for a few weeks now. In kindergarten this is so important though! It is a tough skill to hear be able to say all the sounds in a word and then be able to take them and blend them together. We are also continuing to focus on our sight words, which are a huge part of reading and writing at this age. If I could only tell you two things that would help your kindergartener learn to read more fluently, I would say sight words and sounding words out! Eventually towards the end of the year they begin to sound out in their heads=)

Writing
In writing we are continuing to write our stories. I hope everyone enjoyed them on open night=) I have also began to work on handwriting. In the beginning of the year I am just happy they are writing! Now towards the middle we will begin to focus on keeping the letters in the lines=)

Math
Next week we begin our unit on addition. I think with how well the students did on their number bonds, addition will come easily to them. (Another easy thing to practice in the car;))
Also our goal for the next quarter will be counting to 75.

Science
In science we will be talking about wind, and how it is made, and how it can help us or sometimes harm us. We will also be making wind socks!

Bible
All this week we will be focusing on our Class Chapel for the following week. I think it is so important for students to get a chance to perform in front of others. I think it really helps with confidence and leadership skills later down the road. Speaking in front of others is a huge step for our little kinders, so please help them feel confident and relaxed by helping them at home with their lines=)

And some pictures because you can never have enough=) Students at their math stations. Math, games, and fun all in one!

I hope everyone has enjoyed their weekends=)

Happy Friday Parents!

Notes:
·       I have scheduled a few parents for conferences, let me know if you would like one, again it is optional.
·       We are running low on snacks for when students forget theirs. If you have anything you would like to donate to the class, that would be wonderful! Thank you.
·       Also, if you have a few clothes your student has outgrown, we have a bin of clothes at the end of the hall for oops moments. I was thinking coats, socks, leggings, ect. We do not need a lot, but a couple things would come in handy=)
·       Next Thursday is Open house, we have a lot of fun things to share, so I hope to see everyone there!

Literacy
In reading we are really beginning to work hard on sounding out our CVC (Consonant, vowel, consonant) words. Students are still learning to hear each sound in the word, the beginning sound, the middle sound, and the last sound. Once they learn how to do this, blending sounds together becomes much easier! Do not be worried if your child is sounding out a word like cab and says /c/ /a/ /b/, CAT!. This is a normal hurdle for students to get over in their learning to read, just continue to have them practice and eventually they will begin to hear the sounds more, they are just learning to train their ears=) (This actually helps with speech too!) Also helping student’s break words up into sounds is a great easy car activity! Say “break up pig”, and they say “/p/ /i/ /g/”. Their reading and writing will be helped tremendously!
K.RF.2d- I can read CVC words. I can say each sound in a word.

Here is a few pictures of the students reading together. I love kindergarten, because I get to watch the transformation of kids learning to read=)

Math
Next week students will be taking their test on number bonds (Taking numbers apart, and putting numbers together). They have all done amazing with this! I hope their test score reflect this. Next week we will begin learning how to add and subtract. Because they have done so well with this, I think adding and subtracting will come very easy to them.
K.OA.3- I can show different ways to make a number that is less than or equal to 10.

Bible
In Bible, we focused more on Martin Luther King Jr. We talked about how God influenced his life, and all the great things he did to help our country. Students wrote their own dreams of how to make the world a better place, with a few I love mommies and daddies in between=)

Science
In science we learned about rain. We read some cute books, made some rain art, and even made our own clouds! Here are a few pictures=)

I hope everyone has a great weekend! Side note, Tuesday I will have a substitute, Mrs. Hiller, who will be taking my class at the end of the year, I know the kids will love her! Here are some pics for fun=)

1/10/15

Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great week back to school. I know it went by pretty fast. I was impresses by how quickly the students came back into the routine! This week we cut out our resting time. On Monday, the kids were very happy about this=) On Friday, I did have a few students ask to lay down=)

We started our writing workshop this week, and the students were thrilled! Had had many asking to work on their books at recess time! I can’t wait to share with everyone at Open House.

Literacy
In literacy, like I mentioned last time, we are working really hard on blending sounds together and hearing the ending sounds in a word. For the next few weeks we will continue to work on this. As well, for a few weeks, I will also be testing students, which I will share with parents for report cards.
A new sight word list was sent home today. PLEASE PRACTICE! We practice at school through our reading, poems, and writing, but it is really important for students to practice at home as well.
-K.RF.2c- I can put together word parts. I can take apart word parts.
-K. RF.1d-I know and can name all of the letters of the alphabet.
K.RF.2d- I can read CVC words. I can say each sound in a word.
- K.RF.3c- I can read sight words.

Math
In math we are continuing to work on number bonds, breaking numbers apart and putting numbers back together. We are also continuing to work on counting to 100 and counting by 10’s.
K.OA.3- I can show different ways to make a number that is less than or equal to 10.
Science
We started our Seasons/Weather unit this week and have been talking about winter and snow. Today we read “The Story of Snow”, made snowflakes, and talked about what snow is. Next week we are starting to talk about spring.

Bible
In Bible we are focusing on getting our hearts ready for Jesus. We talked about how we all sin, but we also can choose to make good, kind choices everyday to help our hearts shine for God.

Please forgive me for sending home the bible verse late. One of my goals is to remember on Monday! And next week I promise some pictures=)

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

January 5th

Happy New Years! I hope everyone had a great Christmas, and is ready to come back to school! Sorry about not posting over our break. I was enjoying it a little too much=)
Starting on the 5th there will be a little schedule change. We have weaned out our rest time in the afternoon. Most students did great today, and were a little happy about it=). They may be a little more tired for a while but I will make sure to have calm down times throughout the day. Instead of rest time we will be starting our writing period, which I am very excited about!

Notes
-         Please make sure to practice sight words every night, or at least most nights. I am very persistent on this because I know how much it helps in reading. So please, please practice!
-         Report cards are coming up in a few weeks. I will be meeting with any new students and anyone else who would like a conference. I will be sending out an email soon about this. I enjoy meeting with parents, so even if there are no problems please feel free to still request a conference!
Mrs. Strickland is sending out an email tomorrow to see if any parents have good video or pictures from the play, so keep  your eyes out for that, and hopefully we will have some to post!

Literacy-
In Daily 5 we are working on blending sounds and hearing the final sound in a word. We are also continuing to work on our letters and new sight words each week.
-K.RF.2c- I can put together word parts. I can take apart word parts.
-K. RF.1d-I know and can name all of the letters of the alphabet.
K.RF.2d- I can read CVC words. I can say each sound in a word.
- K.RF.3c- I can read sight words.

Writing-
I am so excited about the writing unit we have started. This month students will be working on personal narratives by making their own books. Their goals are to generate a topic on their own, use pictures and/or words to tell a story, forms recognizable letters, and can hear and record most consonant letter sounds. I will be sending home their work and a rubric of how they did at the end of the month.
K.L.1a- I can print upper and lowercase letters
K.L.2- I can write sentences.
W.K.3-  Use pictures and words to write a story.

Math-
This week we are beginning a new chapter on number bonds. Ask your child if they know what this means=) I hope most of them know by now, we do it in calendar every day. Number bonds are when you put 2 numbers together to make a new number. Right now they understand it with manipulatives, but with pictures they get confused.

This would be a great thing to practice at home. Saying 2 gold fish and 2 gold fish make 4 gold fish. This is a big part of our addition and subtraction later on.
K.OA.3- I can show different ways to make a number that is less than or equal to 10.

Social Studies-

We are beginning our Seasons/ Weather unit. Look for some fun pictures to come!

Thanks!
Mrs. Lee
